A fluoroquinolone antibiotic, Cipro is used to treat bacterial infections, principally by halting the production of the essential proteins that the bacteria need to survive. Cipro can also be used to either slow or prevent the effect of anthrax following exposure.
It is recommended that Cipro is taken orally, with or without food, approximately 2 hours after a meal and with a full glass of water (approx 240ml). Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, drink several further glasses of water a day. To ensure you get the maximum benefit from using Cipro, follow a regular schedule at a regular time each day, and always complete the prescribed course. If you miss a dose of Cipro, take a tablet as soon as you remember, unless this is close to your next scheduled dose. If it is, miss that dose and then return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Avoid taking Cipro with milk or milk-based products, such as yoghurt or calcium-enriched juice, unless the milk or milk-based products are part of a full meal.
Do not take any of the following medications or other products either 6 hours before or 2 hours after taking Cipro:
If you are taking Sevelamer, do not take this medication within 4 hours, either before or after, of taking Cipro.
Cipro is to be stored at room temperature, below 86A°F (30A°C), in its original container, tightly closed and away from heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. The product must be kept out of the reach of children and pets at all times. Any medication that is out of date should be disposed of safely (any pharmacist will be able to advise you on disposal instructions).
If you are allergic to any ingredients contained in Cipro or to any other fluoroquinolene, such as levofloxacin, or you have recently received a live, oral typhoid vaccination, or you are taking either cisapride or tizanidine, do not use Cipro and consult your doctor immediately.
Advise your doctor or pharmacist of any medical conditions or medications you currently have, and if any of the following apply:
If you experience any of the following side effects, seek emergency medical treatment and notify your doctor as soon as possible. Possible side effects include:
Do not share Cipro with anyone else. It is recommended that you always complete a prescribed course. Do not use Cipro at a later date for a different medical reason, unless advised by your doctor.
Please note that the above list is not complete and other side effects may occur. Should any other side effects happen, consult your doctor as soon as possible.
